Chapter 17: Lana's Mistake

I pulled the blanket up to my chin, and Jonas sat up beside me and reached for his jeans.

Lana did not seem to notice or care.

"Good morning, Nina," she said. "I brought someone to look at you."

The man in the white coat beside her was fifty, tired, and clean-shaven, with a stethoscope around his neck and a worn leather bag.

"I'm the camp physician," he said. "The General asked me to check your vitals."

"Of course he did."

"It will only take a minute."

Jonas stood between the bed and the door, buttoning his shirt.

He did not say a word.

He didn't have to.

The doctor looked at him, at the pile of clothes on the floor, and at me, and he politely studied the ceiling.

"Pulse first," he said.

I held out my wrist.

He took it, and his fingers were warm and professional, and he counted for fifteen seconds.

Nothing came behind my ears.

He was only a doctor with a job to do.

Lana crossed the room to the little table and poured water from a pitcher into a tin cup.

"You must be parched," she said. "Here."

She held it out to me.

I took it.

Our fingers touched on the rim.

*Three of every four doses in the crates are saline. Calvin cut them to stretch the stock. Two patients on the ward died last week from it, and the General told us to burn the charts.*

I did not drop the cup.

I held it very still.

"Lana," I said. "Thank you."

"Of course. I want you comfortable."
