Chapter 24: Her Whole Name

The wedding was in Elvira's garden, at six, with the lemons ripe and the little lights already lit.

There were a hundred and four guests, because Elvira had refused to cross anyone off.

Lucia stood at the back of the lawn with Marta's arm through hers and listened to the chairs creak.

"You look beautiful," Marta said, for the fifth time.

"I look like a girl with a scar."

"You look like my sister's daughter," Marta said, and her voice broke. "Which is the same thing."

Lucia's dress was ivory, with a low square neck and no veil.

Her hair was pinned up on both sides, and nothing covered her face.

She had decided it in the mirror three nights before, and she had not changed her mind.

The quartet began.

She walked down the grass between the rows.

She saw the nurse with the squeaky shoes in a blue dress, wiping her eyes.

She saw the detective in her gray blazer, sitting very straight.

She saw the bookkeeper in the third row.

Beside her sat a small pale girl from Tulsa, who had come on the bus again.

Nobody lifted a phone.

Rafael waited under the lemon tree in a dark suit.

He had cut his hair, and she could tell he had not slept.

His hands were folded in front of him so tightly that the knuckles showed.

He watched her come the whole way down the lawn.

His eyes filled, and he did not wipe them.

"It's not the lights," he said, when she reached him, very low.

"I know," Lucia said.

Elvira sat in the front row in her chair, with her diamonds on.

Her tinted glasses were turned toward the sound of Lucia's shoes.
