Chapter 20: Clause Seven

The lawyer arrived at ten past eight in a camel coat.

She found a pregnant woman asleep sitting up on her front step.

She didn't say anything.

She unlocked the door, turned on the heat, and made me a cup of weak tea.

"I'd like to see the contract," I said. "Page nine."

"Clause seven."

"Clause seven."

She put the document in front of me.

I read it again, all of it, the way I should have read it in September.

Whoever claims it forfeits the birth payment.

Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars, at the birth.

I read the number twice and felt nothing.

"Did Mr. Brennick send you?" said the lawyer.

"No."

"Then what do you want?"

"I want a pen."

She gave me one.

"Gavin said it out loud last night in front of fifty people," I said. "That breaks clause seven. I broke it too."

"He already called me at seven this morning. He said the money was yours to keep or tear."

I looked up.

"He's what?"

"He's on the bench across the street, in a very good coat, and he's been there since seven. He said he wouldn't come in until you did."

I turned my head.

There he was, not looking at me.

He had his hands between his knees and snow on his shoulders.

I looked back at the page.

"Then I forfeit it too," I said. "In writing. The whole seven hundred and fifty thousand."
