Chapter 14: On Her Terms
At midnight I came down the stairs in my bare feet and found him sitting at the kitchen table with nothing in his hands.
He had no coffee and no phone, and the only light was the small bulb over the stove.
He looked up and did not stand.
"You told me not to wait up," Torin said.
"I did."
"I'm not waiting.
"I'm sitting."
I stopped on the far side of the table, and the sound started in his chest again, low and steady.
My hands were warm.
I had stopped pretending I didn't know why.
"You asked what I said that night," I said.
"Yes."
"I said yours."
He did not move, and his eyes went gold at the edges.
"That was the girl who believed you," I said.
"She's not who's standing here."
"Who is?"
"A woman with a bakery, two kids and a rule that was hers to make.
"You're not married.
"You haven't touched me in seven years.
"And I want to know what it feels like when I'm the one who decides."
I walked around the table and stopped in front of his chair.
He had to tip his head back to look at me.
"Here is how it goes," I said.
"Your hands stay where I put them.
"You don't move unless I say so.
"You don't talk unless I ask you something."
"Ingrid," he said.
"That was talking."
He closed his mouth.
The corner of it moved, and then it stopped moving, and he sat there with his hands on his thighs and his breath coming fast.
I took his wrists and set his hands on the edge of the table behind him.
"Hold on," I said.
He held on.
I put one knee on the chair beside his hip and sat down across his lap.
He was already hard against me through his jeans.
I felt it all the way up, and I let him feel me feel it.
"You've been thinking about this for four days," I said.
"For seven years."
"I didn't ask."
He shut his eyes.
I took his face in my hands, tilted it up and kissed him.
I did it slowly, because I could.
He kissed me back with his hands gripping the table so hard the wood creaked, and he did not move them.
When I bit his lower lip, he made a sound I felt in my thighs.
I pulled his shirt up and over his head and dropped it behind me.
His chest was as hot as I remembered, and broader, and there was a pale scar I did not know along his ribs.
"What's that?" I said.
"Talk."
"A rogue, when I was twenty-three.
"It healed in a week."
"Strong wolf," I said.
I put my palms flat on his ribs.
The gold came up under my skin before I knew it was coming, a thin light that spread out from my hands over his chest.
Torin gasped and arched into it.
"Don't move," I said.
"I'm not," he said.
"You are."
"I'm trying not to," he said.
"Try harder."
I watched the light move over him, shivering across the muscle, and I understood what it was doing, even if I didn't know why.
It was finding something.
His wolf pushed up under my hands, and it was not afraid of me.
