Chapter 22: Marissa Alone
Marissa did not come in.
She waited in the gym doorway until the crowd had thinned, and then she waited until I had set Milly down.
"Daddy, who's that?"
"It's Mommy, bug."
"Oh." Milly looked at her and did not run to her. "Is she mad?"
"I don't think so."
Myra crouched in front of Milly and said, "Come with me. I need a cookie, and I need an expert."
She took Milly's hand and led her to the refreshments table by the bleachers.
I crossed the gym slowly.
Marissa had changed in a week.
Her blonde hair was pulled back without care, her face was bare, and the pearl necklace was gone from her neck.
She looked ten years older and, strangely, more like the girl who had cried at our wedding.
"I saw her," she said.
"You were here for all of it?"
