"It isn't lying if I say the true thing louder."

He looked tired and he looked sure, and I hated how much I liked both.

"I'm not coming," I said.

"I understand."

"I'm not asking you to."

"Dinah," he said, "I'm not asking you for a single thing."

I walked past him toward the elevators with my hands in my cardigan pockets.

I didn't look back.

I slept badly in the sublet the baker's niece had lent me on Friday, two blocks from the office.

Pickle took the whole bed.

At ten to nine the next morning a long gray car stopped outside the bakery.

The driver got out and opened the back door.

Adelaide sat inside in a hat, with her cane across her knees.

"Get in," she said.

"I'm not going."

"Of course you aren't. Get in anyway."

I got in.

The Grand's lobby was a long marble room with a fountain in the middle and a chandelier the size of a car.
