Chapter 9: Two A.M. Kitchen

At two in the morning the Kincaid house was quiet enough to hear the pipes.

Brittany lay in the big grey bedroom at the end of the east hall and stared at the ceiling.

Her room had its own lock, a window onto the water, and a bed she could not sleep in.

She kept hearing his mother's voice at the restaurant.

She kept seeing the hand come up.

She got up, put on the long cardigan from her suitcase, and went down the back stairs for tea.

A light was already on in the kitchen.

Elliot stood at the counter in a grey shirt with the sleeves pushed to his elbows, filling a kettle.

He had no jacket and no tie.

It was the first time she had seen the line of his forearms.

"You're up," he said, without turning.

"So are you."

"I don't sleep much."

"I'd noticed," Brittany said. "The lights in your study stay on all night. I can see them from the east hall."

He glanced at her then. It was a short look and it did not hurry.

"Sit," he said. "Please. I'll make it."

She sat on a stool at the island and watched him find two cups.

He knew where everything was and moved without wasting a motion.

"The papers ran the lunch," he said. "With the wrist."

"Your assistant has a good grip."

"He says he's sorry about it."

"He wasn't sorry at all." She almost smiled. "I liked him for it."
