Chapter 8: Lunch Ambush

By morning the gate had become a headline.

Heiress Walks Out On Adopted Son, said the one Brittany read in the car.

Under it was a photograph of her face in the headlights, looking cold.

"Do you want it answered?" Elliot's assistant asked from the front seat.

"Not by a statement."

Her phone buzzed with a text from Dalton's mother.

One o'clock, Maren's on the river. Come alone. Bring an apology.

"I'm going," Brittany said.

"Mr. Kincaid would prefer you did not go alone."

"Then sit where I can see you."

Maren's was the restaurant Dalton's family used for every christening and every birthday.

It was full at one o'clock.

His mother had taken the round table in the middle of the room, where every other table could watch.

She wore her good grey suit and her pearls, and she did not stand.

Beside her sat Dalton's sister, pale and stiff in a long coat.

She had left the hospital a day early. Her hand kept pressing the side of her stomach.

"Sit," his mother said.

Brittany sat.

The assistant took a table two feet away and opened a menu.

"I'll make this simple," his mother said. "You embarrassed my son in front of cameras. You will call him today and say it was a misunderstanding."

"I won't."

"You'll also apologize to this family in writing. And you'll pay for what you've cost us."
