Chapter 7: At the Gate

The black car slowed at the north gate, and Brittany saw him before the headlights found him.

Dalton stood in the middle of the road in his shirtsleeves, with one hand raised to stop the car.

Behind him, two photographers had already climbed out of a van.

"Stay in the car," Elliot said.

"No."

She opened her own door before the driver could.

The night air smelled of pine and wet stone.

The gate guards stood in a line across the opening with their hands folded.

None of them looked at her.

"Brittany." Dalton's voice cracked on her name. "Thank God. Get in my car. We'll talk at home."

"I don't live there anymore."

"Don't be dramatic."

He laughed, a short wrong sound, and glanced at the photographers.

"She had a fall this week," he told them. "She hit her head. She isn't herself. This is my wife."

The cameras came up.

Elliot stepped out and came around to stand at her shoulder.

He did not touch her. He did not say a word.

Brittany looked at Dalton for a long moment.

His collar was open and his eyes were red.

For the first time she could see how hard he had to work to keep his face kind.
