Chapter 24: Last Row, Together

The team bus waited in the hotel lot at midnight with its door folded open and its engine running.

Ty came down the steps of the lobby with his bag over his shoulder and his hand in Lars's.

Nobody stared. A week ago that would have been the whole bus, turning in their seats.

Now Cullen was standing at the bottom step with a bag of chips and a look of enormous innocence.

"Evening, gentlemen," Cullen said. "Have you read the sheet?"

The sheet was taped inside the glass of the door, in square black handwriting.

Ty had read a hundred of them without reading them. He read this one.

Row 12, last row. HOLMGREN, INGRAM. By choice.

Behind him the rest of the team had gathered on the pavement.

"That's the lavatory row," a defenseman said.

"It's the best row," Lars said. "Quietest."

"Cap, you can't put yourself in the back. You're the captain. You sit up front."

"I'm the captain until Monday." Lars took the pen off its string and handed it to Cullen. "If anyone wants to change the sheet, he can come and ask me."

Cullen weighed the pen in his hand.

He drew a long, careful line under the words in Lars's handwriting. Then he leaned in and wrote one more line beside it.

First class again, Prince?

Ty read it and burst out laughing.

It was the first time the name had made him laugh.

"Row twelve, Pratt," Ty said. "By choice. Sit down."
