Chapter 30: Pinning
I stood on the dock with the phone in one hand and my father's pin in the other.
Angelo read the text over my shoulder.
"You going to answer her?"
"I'm thinking."
"You're doing the eyebrow," he said.
"I don't have an eyebrow."
"You have one now. You caught it off me."
I typed with my thumb.
It's not too much. Sit wherever you want.
Then I thought about it, and I added one more line.
Bring tissues. You'll need them.
He asked me the next morning, over coffee at his little table.
"Will you let me court you?"
"Ask me tomorrow."
He asked the morning after that, on the stairs.
Then at the hospice door, where I'd gone back to work nights while I waited for my license.
Then in the ring with a pad on each hand while I hit them.
Twenty-two days in a row.
On the twenty-third day he asked my mother first.
She'd moved back into the rowhouse in Port Richmond by then, alone.
He sat at the tiny kitchen table in his good jacket, with his knees up near his chin.
