Chapter 29: Packer Avenue
The welterweight drove me down Columbus Boulevard in the cook's van.
"Do you know what this is?" I asked him.
"Nope," he said, grinning at the windshield. "Absolutely not."
The Packer Avenue terminal was all chain-link and cranes, blue and red and enormous against the white winter sky.
I'd been here once since the funeral.
I was fifteen, and I'd thrown up by the fence.
The gray-haired man from the union hall was in the gate shack.
He took his cap off when he saw me.
"Berth four," he said. "Straight down, by the water. He's been waiting since ten."
"It's two."
"I know. He wouldn't sit."
I walked down between rows of stacked containers.
The wind came off the Delaware and went right through my coat.
Men in orange vests stopped working as I passed.
One of them touched his hard hat.
Then another.
Nobody said anything.
