Chapter 28: The Chair
The concrete captain laughed out loud.
"Nobody? Then Paulie gets it from a jail cell. You heard the will."
The lawyer took off his glasses.
"Riley," he said carefully. "If you don't name anyone, the old will stands."
"I didn't say I wasn't naming anyone," I said. "I said nobody sits in the chair."
I looked down the table at him.
"Read me the words again. The exact ones."
He didn't need the paper.
"Whoever she names within thirty days will hold that vote."
"Whoever," I said. "Not whichever brother. Not whichever captain. Whoever."
The lawyer's mouth twitched.
"That's what he wrote," he said.
"Then I name the men who load the ships," I said.
"Every longshoreman, every driver, every man in the yards on the Corso payroll."
"The vote goes to them, one each. And their first vote is to buy the company from the trust and run it themselves."
Nobody breathed.
Then the table exploded.
