Chapter 7: Leverage

Angelo moved before I did.

He set me down off the table and was at the foot of the stairs in two strides.

Paulie didn't back up one step.

He just turned the phone around so we could see the screen.

It was me on the tasting table with my dress up around my thighs.

Angelo's hand under it.

My mouth open on his.

"Already in the cloud, kid," Paulie said. "And in my lawyer's email. So don't bother."

"Give me the phone."

"Or what?" Paulie came down one more stair, smiling. "You'll break my hand? You don't do that anymore. You quit, remember? You run a gym for losers and you go to bed at ten."

Angelo's fists were closed so tight his knuckles had split open again.

A drop of blood ran down to his wrist.

"Angelo," I said.

He didn't look away from his brother.

"Angelo. Look at me."

He looked at me.

"He wants you to," I said. "That's the whole point of the stairs."

Paulie laughed and clapped once, slowly.

"See? She's smart. Smarter than the other one." He put the phone in his coat. "Okay, sweetheart. Here's how this goes."

He settled on the step.

"My brother's been on the phone with his lawyer twice this week. Behind closed doors. He moved his own wedding up two months. He made this one best man instead of me." He nodded at Angelo. "A man in that much pain shouldn't be that busy."

I kept my face still.

So he didn't know the pills had stopped being sugar.

He only knew Domenic was thinking.

"You sleep in that room every night," Paulie said. "His desk is ten feet from his bed. I want to know what's in his will. The old one, the new one, any piece of paper with a signature on it."
