Chapter 22: The Prayer Book
The hospital was in Oak Park, eight minutes from the house.
The driver met them at the door in the sweater he wore on Sundays, with his eyes red.
"She was making the coffee," he said. "She just sat down on the floor."
Aoife was in the hall outside the room in pajama pants and her denim jacket.
She grabbed Mickey's arm.
"It's a stroke, but a small one," she said, fast, the way she talks at exams.
"The left side of her mouth, and her left hand's weak. She knew her name, the date and the president. She called the paramedic a donkey."
"In English?"
"In Italian. I know that word now."
Vin was already at the door.
He stopped there.
Through the glass, the room was small and green and full of beeping.
Nonna lay propped up on two pillows in a hospital gown, tiny, her white hair down for the first time Mickey had ever seen.
The left corner of her mouth drooped.
Her eyes were sharp as tacks.
Pietro sat beside her bed in a chair he'd pulled close, holding her good hand.
