Sunday brunch at my mother's table was a tradition, and nobody had ever skipped it.
Jase was already in his chair when I came in, with a mug of coffee he wasn't drinking.
He looked like he had slept in his jacket.
My stepfather sat at the head, my mother stood at the stove with a spatula, and the whole kitchen smelled like French toast and bacon.
Nobody said good morning.
"Sit, honey," my mother said. "Eat first."
"I can't."
"Eat anyway."
I sat, and she put a plate in front of me, and I stared at it.
"Zara sent a message to the whole team at two in the morning," my stepfather said. "I've read it three times."
"I know."
"Jase won't tell me why she did it."
Jase looked at his coffee.
I pushed the plate away and stood up.
My knees were shaking, so I put both hands on the back of my chair.
"I'll tell you," I said.
"Melina," Jase said, very low.
