Chapter 15: Zara Talks
I opened the door, because I was done being afraid of what stood behind it.
Zara Holloway stood in the hallway in her white coat, snow melting on the fur.
Her mascara had run, and she didn't seem to know.
She looked past me at Jase, and her mouth went small.
"Of course," she said. "Of course he's here."
"Zara," Jase said. "Not now."
"Now is the only time I've got."
She walked into my room and sat on Hallie's bed.
She took out her phone, thumbed it open, and held it up toward him.
"Read the one from September tenth, babe," she said. "Out loud. Go ahead."
Jase's face closed.
"Zara."
"Then I will."
She turned the screen toward herself.
"'Found something you'd love. Go read it and tell me what you think. It's about our team.'"
I felt my hands go cold.
"And the link," Zara said. "A story called 'Off the Boards.'"
"You sent her the link," I said.
Jase said nothing.
