Chapter 14: Jase's Side
I got in, because my feet had gone numb and I had nowhere else to put my pride.
Jase pulled out of the lot and didn't speak for two blocks.
The wipers pushed the snow back and forth across the glass.
"He told you," Jase said.
"Did you say it?"
"Say what?"
"Pathetic. About me. In a bar, to Rhett, for a game of pool."
His hands tightened on the wheel.
"Yes."
I looked out the window at the dark storefronts.
"Park at Lantry," I said. "I'm not doing this in a moving truck."
Hallie was still at the film room, and our dorm room was dark and warm and smelled like her vanilla candle.
Jase stood inside the door with his shoulders almost touching the bunk frame.
I turned on the string lights above my desk and sat on my bed.
He looked at the ink stains on my fingers, and then at the stack of printed pages on the shelf.
"I should tell you what I really said that night," he said.
"I heard the version without the pool table."
