Chapter 22: Real Terms

The stats room at Halverson Arena was a windowless closet with a copier, six filing cabinets and a table.

It was the only place on campus that was entirely mine.

I had printed the terms on a clean stat sheet, with a header and everything.

Rhett knocked at nine, which was when I'd said, and stood in the doorway with a pen behind his ear.

"You wanted this," he said, and held it out.

"You brought a pen."

"I brought two. In case you want to stab me with one."

"Sit."

He sat on the edge of the table, because there was one chair and it had my clipboard on it.

I slid the sheet across.

He didn't look at it.

He looked at me.

"Read it," I said.

"Is there a clause where I get to say something first?"

"No."

"Okay."

He took the pen from behind his ear, clicked it, and signed his name at the bottom in blocky capitals.

I stared at him.

"You didn't read it."

"I don't need to."

"You could be signing away your truck."

"Then I'd walk." The corner of his mouth twitched. "Melina, I read every chapter you ever posted. If you write it down, I believe it."
