Chapter 14: Coffee

He went quiet for a long moment, looking at me from two inches away with my bite in his shoulder.

Then he grinned.

"Fine," he said. "Then I'm wearing it."

"Good."

"Marlee will smell it from the road."

"Good," I said again, and he laughed until the knot let go.

At noon the next day the Pinegate Diner was so full that Mom had propped the back door open for air.

I had tried to hide in the kitchen.

Mom had handed me an apron and a tray.

"You walk out there and get your dignity back," she said, "or you wash dishes until you're forty."

So I carried plates through a room of loggers who stared at their eggs.

Every one of them knew.

Every one of them had been in the Grange hall.

I put a pot roast in front of the old logger who'd shouted "About time!" and he winked at me.

I was starting to relax.

Then the bell over the door rang, and the room went quiet in a ripple, table by table, until I could hear the fryer.

Marlee stood in the doorway.

She had on her work boots and her mill jacket, and her lip ring caught the light.
