Chapter 5: Her Best Friend's Nose

"This doesn't happen again," Kellan said.

He was sitting on the edge of the bed with his back to me, pulling on his boots.

It was five in the morning and he had already showered.

I lay across his sheets with the quilt up to my chin and watched the muscles in his shoulders pull tight.

"Okay," I said.

He glanced back, wary.

"Okay?"

"I heard you. This doesn't happen again."

"I'm serious."

"I can tell. You're lacing your boots like they owe you money."

He didn't smile.

"The Courting runs six more nights. You'll do it right. You'll pick someone who's your age and who isn't going to ruin your life."

"I picked someone."

"You picked what the heat picked."

"Kellan." I sat up. "You don't have to believe me. But if you tell me it's just the heat one more time, I'm going to bite you."

His hands stopped on the laces.

His shoulders shook once, and I couldn't tell if it was from laughing or from something worse.

"I'll walk you home through the woods," he said.

"I can walk myself."

"You'll do what I say."

"I do what I want."

He stood and looked down at me, huge and tired, and for a second his mouth went soft.

Then his face shut like a door.

"I'm going to the mill," he said. "Lock up when you leave."

He left.

I lay in his bed a long time with the smell of him all over me.

My wolf wasn't sad.

It was confident.

It knew something the man didn't.

I took a shower in his bathroom, because I'm not a saint, and dressed in my jeans and his flannel, and went home to be fed.

By eleven I was behind the counter at the Pinegate Diner with an apron on.

My mother had said, "If you're going to stay up all night, you might as well work," and then added, "And wear a high collar."
