Chapter 22: Kieran's Debt
The harbor patrol fished Declan out alive, with two broken ribs and a broken forearm.
He woke in a hospital bed with a policeman on a chair outside his door.
The charges came the same afternoon, kidnapping and attempted murder, and a detective came to Orla's door with a notebook.
Orla poured him tea and answered every question with a different saint.
By the third Friday of January, the Kavanagh table had no empty chairs and no captain with his mouth shut.
Kieran stood in the middle of the dining room.
He wore a borrowed shirt buttoned to the throat, and his split lip had healed to a thin pink line.
Nobody had tied his hands.
Nobody needed to.
I sat at Orla's right with my palms flat on my knees, because I did not trust them.
Lena sat beside me, in a blue dress, with her sleeves rolled up and nothing on her wrists.
She had moved into Orla's spare room, where a woman could eat her toast in peace.
Ronan sat across the table from me with his cold eyes fixed on my brother.
