Chapter 23: The Vetting
Hana walked into the Fenwick Street kitchen at 6:58 on Sunday with a laminated clipboard and a tray of rye rolls.
"I've been briefed," she said. "I have a rubric."
"A what?" said Hammer.
"Sit down, I'm going to score you."
Seven women sat down at the long table in a row, with their hands folded.
It was the most dangerous thing I'd ever seen.
Vivian took the head chair, with her half glasses on and a single sheet of paper in front of her.
"Ms. Lee," she said. "We have a few questions."
"Number one is a font crime," said Hana, tapping the paper. "Is that Times New Roman? In this economy?"
Doc stood up and took her wrist before anyone sat back down.
"Pulse is high," Doc said. "She's nervous."
"I'm nervous because a surgeon is holding my arm."
"Good. Nervous means she cares."
"Let her sit," I said.
"Question one," said Vivian. "What are your intentions toward our brother?"
"Terrible ones," Hana said, and the table roared.
Judge slid a folder across the wood.
