Chapter 12: What Was Under Her Face

Angelo's POV

By six in the morning the photograph had been deleted from the staff channel, and four hundred employees had already saved it.

I stood in my office on the top floor with my head of security, and watched him read me the log.

"The post went up at 12:40 a.m.," he said. "From the executive admin account."

"Whose?"

"That account has three users."

"Whose, I asked."

He didn't say the name at first.

He said, "Yours, the CFO's, and the chief of staff's."

I had known before he finished the sentence.

Knowing and proving are different things, and I had been in business long enough to want the second.

"Don't touch the account," I said. "Don't tell anyone you've looked at it. Pull the door logs for the lobby on the night of the fourteenth of March."

"That's five months of footage."

"Then you'd better start."

He left.

I stood at the window and looked down at the street where I had carried Tala out of the gutter, and I thought about her asleep in our bed with her ankle on a pillow.

I had not wanted to leave her at the house.

I had made her promise to keep the door locked and the phone in her hand, and Dessa was on the way over.

It still felt wrong.

At seven-fifteen Noelle walked in without knocking, holding two coffees.

"Good morning," she said. "I brought yours. No sugar."
