Chapter 29: How Late

"Late for what?" I said.

"Don't." Dessa held up one hand. "I'm a trained professional."

"Dessa."

"You ate like a lumberjack, and you went gray in a hallway. You've sniffed every cup of tea since Christmas like it owed you money."

"I'm upset. His mother just..."

"How late?"

I did the math in my head, in the restroom mirror, with Dessa watching.

"Two weeks," I said. "A bit more."

Dessa unlocked the door.

"My car's in the staff lot," she said. "Get your coat."

There was a pharmacy on Geary that stayed open all night.

Dessa bought three boxes and put them on the counter with her hospital badge on top.

"Customer restroom," she told the clerk. "Urgent."

He gave her the key without a question.

I took the first test in a bathroom that smelled of lemon cleaner, and I did not look at it.

Then I came out and sat down in the waiting area to wait.

The chairs were orange plastic, bolted in a row.

The cold came up through my jeans.

For one second I was in the emergency room again, with a paper in my hand and a phone I couldn't press.

Dessa sat down beside me and didn't say a word.

She took my hand.

When she turned the test over on her knee, she kept it covered with her palm until she was ready.

Then she lifted it.

There were two pink lines, and the second one was dark enough to read across a room.
