Chapter 22: The Seat
The old woman in the middle of the ring raised her hand and brought it down.
The bald warden moved first.
He was not fast, but he was very big, and he hit Nolan across the jaw with a fist.
Nolan's head snapped sideways.
The pack gasped.
My left wrist went numb with the echo of it, and I bit down on the inside of my cheek.
"He's feeling this," I said to Mavis, who stood beside me.
"I'm feeling his."
"Then stand up straight and let him know you're there," said Mavis.
I stood up straight.
Across the circle, Nolan shook out his head once and spat red onto the snow.
He did not look at the warden.
He looked at me.
He gave me the smallest nod I have ever seen, the kind you give a friend across a noisy room.
Then he stepped back out of the next blow, and the next, and the next, with his arms low.
