Chapter 21: Not Luna
The circle went quiet enough to hear the snow land.
Jarek knelt with his hands open on his knees, and the whole pack looked from him to me.
I had imagined this exact picture a hundred times over two years.
In every version I felt a hard bright joy.
Now I felt tired, and a little sad, and nothing else.
"Get up, Jarek," I said.
"Luna," he said again.
"Please.
"The bond is still on you.
"You only have to name it."
"No," I said, loud enough for the back rows.
"I'm not your Luna.
"I'm not anyone's Luna tonight."
"You gave that name to Brida in this circle, and you can keep it between you.
"I wouldn't take a title from you if you had it gift-wrapped."
Somebody snorted, and somebody else coughed to cover it.
Jarek's shoulders bowed.
He nodded slowly.
"Then let me say the rest," he said.
"I can't kneel here and say it softly."
