Chapter 20: The Gauntlet
Snow started to fall on the evening of the Cold Moon, small and dry, and it settled on the stones of the circle.
The whole pack stood in a ring with torches, and the moon was a pale smear behind the clouds, not yet over the ridge.
Brida's brother stepped out first.
He was twenty-four, six feet and thick through the shoulders, and he had been told to break my arm.
I knew because I had heard him say it to his friends in the lodge yard, in a voice meant to carry.
"First blood or yield," said the oldest woman in the pack, in the middle of the ring.
"No teeth in human form.
"Begin."
He came in fast, with his fists high.
I let him.
I had learned in a barn that the hardest part of a bigger man's attack is standing still for the first half second.
His fist went past my ear, and I felt the wind of it.
