Chapter 12: Strike Seven
Weston shut the bedroom door behind us and leaned against it.
"Nobody asked me," I said.
"I know."
"You said yes to a chairwoman, in front of your uncle, with my hand in yours."
"I know. I'm asking you now."
He crossed to the dresser and opened the top drawer.
He took out a small blue box and held it in his palm without opening it.
"When did you buy that?"
"The day you wrote the contract. I walked past a window on the way back from the dinner."
"That's four days ago."
"It's just down the street from the office. I didn't have to go far."
I stared at him.
"Weston, that's not romantic. That's insane."
"I know that too." He opened the box. "It was my grandmother's stone, and I had it reset. Nobody has ever worn it."
It was an old square diamond in a plain band of gold.
It was beautiful, and it was not too large, and it was exactly the ring I would have picked.
My throat closed.
"This is a business arrangement," I said, in a voice I did not recognize.
"Strike it."
"What?"
"Clause seven. You're a lawyer. Cross it out." He held out a pen from the dresser. "Write the second contract yourself. Whatever terms you want. But don't ask me to pretend again."
I took the pen.
There was a pad of stationery on the nightstand, cream paper with the chairwoman's initials.
I sat on the edge of the bed and wrote in block capitals.
SECOND AGREEMENT. Clause seven is struck by mutual consent.
