Chapter 15: The Crown
Linnet's POV
I woke on the daybed in the Pruett front room, and Cassian was on the floor beside me with his back against the frame.
His hair was still wet, and he had not changed his shirt.
"What time is it?" I said.
"Noon."
"How much did it take?"
He didn't answer, and I looked down.
The black lines had crossed my collarbone and gone up the side of my neck.
I pulled the quilt over them.
"Eleven hours," he said. "Maybe less."
"That's plenty."
"Linnet."
"Don't."
"I saw all of it." His voice was low and flat, and he kept his eyes on my hands. "I saw you ask him that I would never learn what you paid."
"I couldn't say it to you."
"I know you couldn't." He turned his head and looked at me. "So I'll say it for you, to everybody, when it counts. Do you hear me?"
"Cassian."
"I'm not asking you for anything. I'm not asking you to forgive me."
"Good."
"I'm going out there now. You don't have to come."
I put my feet on the floor.
"Help me up," I said. "I'm not missing it."
He lifted me by the elbows, and I stood.
Mom was in the doorway with the shotgun, and she had been listening.
She said nothing.
She took my other arm, and the three of us went out onto the porch.
The lawn in front of the Pruett house was black with people.
The whole Abyss court had come up from the shore.
Lords and ladies stood in rows on the grass in their dark coats, and behind them my neighbors waited at the edge of the road in their church clothes, close together and wary.
