Chapter 28: The Second Mouth
The Director took out the first brick of the Cheoram seal with his own hands.
It came away so easily that he stood holding it.
It was twenty past one on Saturday the ninth of January, and the wind coming down the Cheoram valley carried sleet.
The seal was a wall of fired brick across the adit mouth, laid in 1991 by a Bureau crew and stamped with the Bureau's mark.
The switchback road lay twelve kilometers behind them, and no house was in sight.
A pine fence had been put up to keep the deer out.
The Director had come without his hat.
Behind him stood the others.
Seok-hyun and Da-hae stood at his shoulders.
The old Songak porter had a coil of rope on his shoulder, and the woman with the mitten held a lantern.
The heavy man leaned on his cane, and the elder brother carried a sack of lamps.
"The brick is carrying the arch," Da-hae said, reading the brickwork with her eyes half shut. "Not the other way round."
"How long once it's open?" Seok-hyun said.
"Ten minutes. Perhaps less." She did not look at him. "I'd hold it."
"I know."
The Director set the brick on the ground with great care and took out another.
Behind the wall lay a drift forty meters long.
The arch over the mouth of it was a frame of black pine timber.
Seok-hyun could see a sag in the cap beam from where he stood.
The air that came out of it was warm, and smelled of coal and old iron and, faintly, of boiled barley.
It was the smell of a lamp house at the end of a shift.
