Chapter 19: The Note
I found Rhodes in the stairwell between thirty-nine and thirty-eight, sitting on a step with his head in his hands.
The censure was folded in his jacket pocket.
He had signed it in front of nine board members and two hundred staff, and he had not argued with a single word.
I sat down one step above him.
"What did you pay the bank?" I said.
He didn't look up.
For a long moment I thought he would say, "Nothing," because that is what men say.
"Fifty-eight thousand dollars," Rhodes said.
The stairwell echoed it back at me.
"When?"
"The Monday after the newspaper. The eleventh. Two days after the elevator."
I had been holding the stair rail.
I let go.
"I told you no," I said. "In a hallway. In the elevator. In every way a woman can say it."
"I know."
"I told you it was my mother's grass."
"I know."
"And last night I stood in your kitchen and said, 'You don't hide.' And you said yes."
