Chapter 31: September
"Seven years ago," my father said, "a swimmer bought forty percent of my yard."
Somebody on the dock laughed.
"He couldn't caulk. He couldn't plank. He called every boat 'she' and talked to the wood. I thought, what did I do."
He looked down at the microphone.
"This April I had a heart attack. I told him not to call my daughter."
"He didn't. He just never left."
The dock had gone very quiet.
"Last week I caught him at the yard at five in the morning, planing a plank for my boat."
"I asked why. He said, 'Because you're not allowed to lift anything, and it still has to be done right.'"
"He sold the Wren to pay my note. You all knew her. He didn't ask me. He didn't ask her either. She yelled at him for it."
He pointed at me.
"Good."
People laughed again, softer.
"He's my best friend," my father said. "He's fifteen years older than my daughter. I said some things about that in April. I was wrong about most of them."
"Dad."
"Quiet. I'm talking."
He held the microphone out toward Cullen without looking at him.
