Chapter 15: The Pass

We reached the Rowan Pass at dusk, and I had not let go of Posy once.

She rode in front of me on Odo's gray, wrapped in two cloaks, with cold-mint on her wrists and her face pale.

The last ford had cost us an hour.

Odo's outriders had dragged a courier in a white temple cloak out of the reeds, with a sealed packet in his belt.

It bore the High Seer's flame in red wax, and it was addressed to the commander of the southern host.

"Hold him," I had said. "I'll open it when I can read it in front of someone who matters."

Now the courier rode tied to a saddle behind us, sulking.

The pass was a gray notch between two mountains, with a ridge of black rock above it.

On the ridge, a thousand campfires burned.

Below it, in a hollow, a few dozen of the king's guard held a line of stakes and torches with their faces turned up.

"Where is he?" I said to the first sergeant who ran to meet us.

"The shepherd's hut, my lady. Up the goat track."

His eyes went to Posy.

"He said you'd come," he said. "He said not to let you."

"Did he say how?"

"He said he'd have to be unconscious."

"Is he?"

"He's been giving orders from the pallet all afternoon."

I kicked the horse forward.

The hut was stone with a turf roof, built into the hill.

A single lantern burned inside, and Torren sat on a pallet by the hearth with his shirt cut away.
