Chapter 17: A Child's Fire
The southern lord's blade stopped in the air.
He couldn't bring it down on a barefoot child in a nightshirt, and he knew it.
Posy planted herself between the two men and glared up at him.
"You're being rude," she said. "Papa's hurt."
"Child," he said hoarsely. "Step aside."
"No. You're mean, and you made my mama cry."
"I did not..."
"Her eyes were wet."
I put a hand over my mouth.
Torren said, very low, "Posy. Come here."
"In a minute, Papa."
She raised one small fist.
Smoke rolled out of her nose, and her eyes went from gold to a white-hot glow.
I felt the heat on my face from ten feet away.
"Posy!" I screamed. "Don't..."
She opened her hand.
Fire poured from her palm in a bright, clean gold ribbon.
It wasn't the sick red of the night before.
It was the color of morning on a wheat field, steady and laughing, and it curled up the southern lord's blade.
The steel went soft.
It sagged at the middle and ran in a bright drip onto the frost, hissing.
