Chapter 23: The Wedding
They married in the Courtyard of a Thousand Mirrors, at noon.
Over the palace roof the court magicians had rolled a red Abyss sky and a white Heavenly one together.
Nine thousand immortals stood on the Heaven side, in white and gold.
Ten thousand demons stood on the other, in black and crimson.
In the middle, at the foot of the altar, stood two people with a red cord between them.
Qinghe wore a white robe stitched with silver clouds, with her hair loose to her waist.
The old betrothal cord was tied twice around her middle as a sash.
Jinye wore crimson, with a gold collar, and a circlet of black glass set low on his brow.
The gold mark on his neck caught the light above his collar.
Chi Wen stood at his side as his groomsman, wearing his good coat and visibly trying to behave.
The Emperor of Heaven stood at hers.
It had not been planned, and she had not objected.
Yan Taiheng had not looked at her directly once.
"The vows," said the old registrar, who had been asked to officiate and had cried twice already.
Jinye spoke first.
"I am Mo Jinye, Demon Emperor," he said, loud enough for the thousand mirrors.
"I have spent three hundred years learning what that word means."
He turned to her.
"I vow to kneel when you say kneel and to rise when you say rise."
"I vow to keep your hand in mine until the last mirror in the last realm goes dark."
A sigh ran through the courtyard.
Qinghe untied the cord from her waist.
"I am Su Qinghe," she said. "On the Jade Stairs I swore I would not look at any man until I stood as an equal."
