Chapter 19: The Waiver

The council chamber was fuller than it had been the morning of the hearing.

Both families sat on opposite sides of the long table, and the council elder stood at the head with the old yellow paper in front of him.

I sat at the far end, where a struck name is allowed to sit, with Tullio on my right and nobody on my left.

Delfina sat between my parents in cream and did not look at me.

My father looked like a man who had not slept in a week.

Raimondo walked in last, with the seven captains behind him.

He did not look at me either.

"Raimondo Corvi," the elder said. "You asked for this council."

"I did."

"State your business."

Raimondo took the folded treaty copy from his coat and laid it on the table.

"Clause nine says the house of Brancato owes the house of Corvi a daughter of its blood," he said. "I am the head of the Corvi house, and the right to claim her is mine alone."

"It is," the elder said.

"I waive it."

Nobody breathed.

Then every Brancato at the table started talking at once.

"Quiet," the elder said, and slammed his cane on the floor.

The room went still.

"You understand what you are saying," he told Raimondo. "If the clause is waived, the Corvi claim on the north docks is waived with it. Your captains lose what they were promised."

"They know. They voted me a seat and I'm using it."

I turned my head toward the seven captains.

The oldest one, the man with the white mustache, met my eye, and he nodded to me once.

"The paper stands," Raimondo said. "The peace stands. The Brancatos keep their territory, and the Corvis keep their word, and no woman is owed to anyone."
