Chapter 21: The Carrier

Delfina came home at seven that morning, calm, with the cat in her arms.

Tullio called me while I was still in Raimondo's kitchen with a cup of coffee going cold in my hand.

"She says she went to a church in Brooklyn to pray," he said. "She says she lost track of the time."

"Does Dad believe her?"

"Dad hugged her in the driveway and cried."

I put the cup down.

"Tullio, where was she for three hours before she got there?"

"My men lost her at the Verrazzano. She switched cars."

Raimondo stood at the window with his back to me.

"The vote is in two days," he said, not turning. "She's planning something."

"She's cornered," I said. "She has nobody left but my father."

"A cornered animal doesn't pray."

I didn't answer, because he was right.

The doorbell rang at nine.

Raimondo's driver was in the hall, with an expression I had never seen on him.

"Miss Brancato, your mother is at the gate," he said. "She's alone. She has a shopping bag."

I went down in my coat.

My mother stood on the Corvi front step in her grey coat, with her pearls crooked and a paper bag from the grocery store held in both arms.

She was shaking so hard the bag rustled.

"I didn't go home last night," she said. "I slept in Tullio's car."

"Mom."

"I have to show you something. Please. Not in the street."

I took her into Raimondo's study and sat her in the chair by the fire.

She put the bag on his desk and drew out King's carrier.

It was cream, with a mesh window, and there was a smear of dried cat food on the zip.

"King wouldn't eat this morning," she said. "I thought it was his stomach. I took the carrier to wash it out in the laundry, and the lining was loose."
