Chapter 4: Four Lines
The hearing was on Wednesday morning, in a family courtroom with a bad clock and wooden benches.
Brooks sat at the left table in a charcoal suit with his lawyer beside him.
Marguerite sat in the first row behind him, in pearls, with her chin up.
Cora sat at the right table in her plainest gray dress, with a lawyer Alexander had found for her and Alexander himself in the front row.
He had his arms crossed and his face blank.
The judge was a heavyset woman with reading glasses on a cord.
"We're here on temporary orders," she said. "Mr. Farwell, your counsel may begin."
Brooks's lawyer stood.
"Your Honor, my client's marriage was a courtesy, never a true partnership. Mrs. Farwell was a live-in household worker with no income of her own."
He lifted a paper.
"She signed a prenuptial agreement five years ago, waiving all claims to my client's property, his company and any support."
He handed it up.
The judge read it, and her mouth turned down.
"Mrs. Farwell," she said. "Is this your signature?"
Cora stood.
"It looks like mine, Your Honor," she said. "But I never signed that page."
Brooks's lawyer smiled at the ceiling.
"Of course she says so now."
"Counsel," the judge said, "let her speak."
"I signed one page at the county clerk's counter five years ago," Cora said. "I'll tell you what it says."
She closed her eyes.
"Marriage License Acknowledgment. Line one: the undersigned affirm they enter this marriage freely. Line two: the undersigned affirm they are not related by blood. Line three: the undersigned affirm they have no other living spouse. Line four: the undersigned have read the notice on the back."
