Chapter 9: The Hospital Fund
Bree came to the house the next morning with a bakery box and red eyes.
I opened the door, because that was what a perfect wife did.
"I'm so sorry," she said at once. "Is Brennan here? I couldn't sleep."
Brennan was in the kitchen in his shirtsleeves with a cup of coffee in his hand.
He had not slept either.
"Come in," he said, and she walked past me and set the box on the island.
I stood at the counter and cut the lemon cake she had brought, because refusing it would have looked like a fight.
"Brennan, I swear I didn't read it," Bree said. "Mr. Hartwell's lawyers sent a template. I copied it into our format and I didn't see paragraph nine. I would never do that to Lena."
She cried quietly, with her hand over her mouth.
"You printed it," Brennan said.
"I print everything."
"You put it in front of her in front of the board."
"Because you told me to handle the paperwork," she whispered.
He rubbed his eyes.
I watched him believe her about a third of the way.
"You're off the Hartwell file," he said. "Two weeks' leave, paid. Go home, Bree."
"You're sending me away?"
"I'm asking you to take some time."
She stood. The tears slid down her face in two neat lines, and she let them.
She reached for her phone on the counter to wipe her eyes with the back of her hand, and the screen woke.
A reminder sat across the top of it, in plain gray letters.
It said: Attorney, Mar 14, confirm.
Then it went dark again, and I thought: the merger closes in March. Of course she's confirming something.
