Chapter 21: Thirty-One Weeks

Rhys's POV

The sound filled the labor triage room, fast and steady, and for the first time in my life it did not frighten me.

A hundred and fifty-two.

I had stood in a hallway once and decided I couldn't be near that sound.

I stood at the head of a hospital bed now with Valeria's hand locked in mine, and I could have stood there all night.

"Contractions are spacing out," said the obstetrician, watching the paper strip curl from the monitor. "The medication's doing its work. I want steroids for the baby's lungs and you flat on your side, Doctor, and I want you to stop saying you feel fine."

"I do feel fine," Valeria said.

"You turned grey in my waiting room."

"That was the stress."

"That was thirty-one weeks and a stepmother." The obstetrician pushed her half-moon glasses up. "If this holds, I will send you home tomorrow. But if you stand up before March for more than a bathroom, I will personally drive to your house and sit on you."

Valeria looked at me, mortified.

I kissed her knuckles.

My hands, I noticed, were not entirely steady.

I had told myself it was the cold.
