Chapter 15: Harbor
The call came at eleven on Wednesday morning, while I was reading a bill of lading at my desk.
A nurse at the hospital on Detroit Avenue asked if I was Gareth Renwick's daughter.
I don't remember the drive.
Torin drove, because I couldn't hold the wheel.
My father lay on a gurney in a curtained bay, with a collar brace on his neck and a long stitched cut above his eyebrow.
His left shoulder was strapped flat to his chest.
"Don't look like that," he said. "It's two ribs and a collarbone."
"What happened?"
"I was careful, Bron. I was so careful."
He kept his eyes on the ceiling tile.
"I took the photocopies of the ledger and Mom's letter to a man I trust," he said.
"My oldest friend on the force.
He's the deputy chief now.
We've fished together twenty years."
My stomach dropped.
"Dad. I told you not to speak to anybody."
"I told him Iona was alive. I told him where."
"What did he say?"
"He said to leave it with him. He walked me to my truck. He shook my hand."
A nurse pulled the curtain back to check the monitor, and he waited until she left.
"Ten minutes later I was on Clifton, in the right lane.
A black pickup came up behind me with its lights off in the daytime."
