Chapter 21: The Door
The lock turned, and the steel door swung in.
The thin housekeeper stood in the hall with a covered tray in both hands.
She was grey from her hair to her shoes, and she did not look at either of us.
"Madam's supper," she said.
It was the first sentence I had ever heard her say.
It came out flat.
My mother had gone stiff on the bed, with her eyes down and her hands folded.
I stepped in front of her.
"Put the tray down," I said.
The housekeeper hesitated.
"Put it on the desk."
I had not raised my voice.
It was the one from the hall, the one I'd found for the deputy chief, low and level and certain of being obeyed.
The tray touched the desk.
The china did not rattle, though her hands did.
"Look at me."
She lifted her head.
Her eyes were pale and washed out, and under the grey there was something very old and very tired.
"You posted the card," I said. "In the rain. You walked to the box with my mother's handwriting under your coat."
Her mouth moved.
"You took a risk nobody asked you to. You did it for her. Do it again."
"I can't," she whispered.
It was almost no sound at all.
