Chapter 27: The Courthouse Steps
"He can't buy it," Macey said beside me. "We paid. We're over. I counted."
"We haven't paid yet, baby. We've got it. That's different."
The money was a cashier's check in my lawyer's briefcase.
Thirty-eight thousand four hundred and twelve dollars and sixteen cents, payable to the county.
Deke had driven it to Uvalde on Friday so Vernie could sign the form in her hospital bed.
She'd signed it with all her rings on.
My lawyer took it out of her briefcase and walked me down the steps to the folding table.
The woman behind it had a cash box, a receipt book and a county seal on her sweater.
The tax collector.
She looked at the check.
She looked at the list in front of her and ran her finger down it.
"Vernie's Dance Hall, Frio River," she said. "That was thirty-eight four twelve on the notice in June."
"That's what's on the check."
"Yes, ma'am." She turned the list around so I could read it. "That was in June. There's penalty and interest every month since, and the costs of the sale. As of this morning it's thirty-nine thousand five hundred sixty dollars and forty cents."
