Chapter 28: Five Minutes
Deke looked at me.
I nodded.
He put his hand on Macey's shoulder and walked her down the steps toward the river people.
She looked back at her daddy once, over her shoulder, and then kept walking.
Darrell and I sat on a bench under the pecan trees on the courthouse lawn.
It was the same lawn where his mother had swept the judges' boxes onto the grass.
There was still a white foam lid caught in the hedge.
He didn't say anything for a long time.
He sat with his elbows on his knees and looked at his hands.
"Four minutes," I said.
"I know."
He rubbed his face.
"I knew," he said. "About the paper."
I didn't move.
"The night Mama brought it home. She put it on the kitchen table and said, 'There. She signed it.' And I looked at it." He swallowed. "Your R doesn't loop like that. You sign Macey's report cards. I've seen your R on nine years of report cards."
The cicadas went on in the pecans.
"I knew it wasn't yours," he said. "And I put it in the safe."
