Chapter 29: The Letter
I didn't open it in the courtroom.
I carried it all the way home to the Frio.
I walked down past both pits and the tin shed, to the flat rock at the edge of the water where Macey had cried in June.
Deke came down a few minutes behind me.
Then he sat down beside me on the rock.
I slit the old tape with my thumbnail.
There were two pages of lined paper inside, folded in thirds.
The same square, heavy pencil as the meat orders.
I read it out loud, because my hands were shaking too much to read it quiet.
"Raylene," I read.
"If you're reading this, somebody finally opened the real copy. So either you made it fifteen years, or my family tried to stop you."
"I wrote page nine on a Tuesday night, after you built my fire without being asked. You'd been here three months."
"My wife has run this family since before Darrell could walk. She runs it like a register. Nobody in it owns anything she can't take back."
"You came here with a knife roll. I've watched how this family treats people who come with a knife roll."
