"Not until the wedding" turned out to be three weeks.
He didn't crack once.
Tilly knew.
She didn't crack either, which was worse.
We got married on the third Saturday in June, on the Locust Point pier.
My father had tied up the Resolute there for thirty years.
No church.
No club.
No dead men in gold frames.
Just folding chairs on the concrete and a harbor so blue it looked fake.
The harbor pilot who'd talked me through the gale married us.
My deckhand walked me down the pier.
He wore my father's tie.
He held my arm so tight the whole way that I couldn't have tripped if I'd tried.
My dress was white and plain and stopped at the knee, so I could climb a ladder in it if I had to.
The back was cut low.
My father's boat was right there on my shoulder, with the one gull.
Bram stood at the end of the pier in the navy suit, with no tie and the right sleeve pushed to the elbow.
