Chapter 23: The Ending, Written
The light went out of the sky slowly.
When it was gone, the plain of white glass had turned to plain grey stone, and the wind smelled of rain.
Emmett and I were standing in the middle of it, hands still locked.
We were both alive.
I checked twice, through the link, and then with my eyes, and then by pressing my palm flat against his chest.
His heart beat steadily under it.
"Hi," he said, shaky.
"Hi."
"Is it over?"
"I don't think so."
Varek stood a dozen paces away, with his hands at his sides and his hollow eyes wide.
The black glass crown on his head had a thin crack in it.
Another one opened as I watched.
"I did not know it could be done," he said. "Fourteen cycles. I wanted it so badly, and I did not know."
"You said you didn't remember what it was," I said.
"I didn't." He touched the crown. "Every Sunblade who came to me tried to die for her Nightwarden. Every Nightwarden tried to die for her. Not one of them tried to live for the other."
