Chapter 18: The Moot
Nobody moved.
On the dark moon, Roman's voice was just a voice.
His Beta moved anyway.
He came around the end of the long table with two patrollers behind him, reaching for my arm.
The strays closed up in front of me without a word.
The old dishwasher.
The housekeeper.
The lift mechanic whose brother died in the shack.
Ginny, holding a grocery bag like a club.
"Sit down."
It came from the head of the table.
The eldest of the three elders was a tiny white-haired woman in gray, with a cane across her knees.
She hadn't raised her voice.
The Beta stopped.
"Nobody is arrested in the Council's hall before the Council hears them," she said. "They came as summoned. Alpha Quaid, sit."
Roman smiled and sat.
The Beta went back to the wall.
We stood at the bottom of the hall, all of us, with snow melting off our boots onto Roman's floor.
"The Alpha's charges," said the elder.
Roman stood again.
He talked for half an hour, warm and sorry, like a man who'd been badly used.
