Chapter 17: The Night Before
Teddy's face went through three expressions when nobody said anything, and none of them was good.
"Is item six bad?" he asked.
"It's perfect," Hayes said.
"She's putting the proxy on the agenda herself."
"She wants the room to clap it through after the plaque, while everyone is still moved."
"That gives me the exact minute I walk in," he said.
He said it calmly.
My friend looked at his hands, flat and very still on the plywood.
She picked up her wine and handed it to him without a word.
He drank half of it.
Then he laughed, a short surprised sound, and the table loosened.
They left near eleven.
Teddy hugged me at the door.
My friend kissed my cheek and said into my ear, "He's looking at you again."
"He's always looking at me."
"I know," she said.
"Good for you."
I locked the shop door behind them.
The work lights were still on over the bench, throwing a hard yellow circle across the floor.
The room smelled of cut pine and plain pasta.
Hayes was stacking paper plates in the trash and not looking at me.
"You're doing it again," I said.
"Doing what?"
"Going quiet."
He tied off the bag and set it by the door.
"I'm thinking about tomorrow."
"Tell me."
He leaned against the bench and crossed his arms.
"Twenty years ago, she stood at the top of those stairs on Power Street."
"She told me I wasn't a son, I was what was left of Warren's first marriage."
"I was seventeen."
"I haven't walked into one of her rooms since."
"Tomorrow there'll be three hundred people in it, and every one of them has been told who I am."
"What are you afraid of?"
